In the Documentary "Slavery By Another Name," it effectively showed how the establishment of the 13th, 14th, and 15th ammendment had no significance unto the change of the treatment of African Americans many years after the Civil War. Although those ammendments were created to protect blacks, the federal government did not allow for the people of color to advance in rights (voting, free labor, free will.) It was slavery by another name because the previous slave holders could use convict leasing or dept peonage against the blacks and keep them inferiror and always in a state where progress and upward mobility were impossible. Essentially, a big theme was that those ammendments were simply a tittle with no effort to fulfill.
