Slavery by Another Name discusses the time after the Emancipation Proclamation and how although the institution of slavery was technically and legally abolished it was basically continued on through different names. One of the examples of this continuation of Slavery was through Convict Leasing, which allowed for the government to lease convicts to private business for an extremely low amount with no care for their well being, where these convicts were intially charged vaguely and with charges that made such extreme labor a completely excessive payment. In this manner police and State law enforcement were able to target African Americans for unreasonable crimes such as vagrance and placing them back into a system which is thought of as being even more brutal than Slavery. The Southern Democratic or Redeemers which stood strongly for this view of the continuation of slavery were the main poltical party which encoaraged and reigned control when the South began reintegrating into the union.
