Slavery By Another Name

In this documentary it showed at first when the slaves were freed it was something that they had been waiting for, for a very long time and it was finally a time in which they could get married and look for other families members that had been lost in the slave trade. From the moment they became freed, Southern whites found any way to put African-Americans back into the position of slavery. Many laws were passed that targeted them and eveything they did. The Pig Laws meant that if they had even stole a pig which was worth just a dollar they would be convicted for 5 years and Vagrancy Statues made it a crime to be umemployed. From there Convict Leasing was created in which they would be work for private parties in coal mines, at plantations, and for Iron Companies.  Convict leasing and the laws passed also led to Sharecropping, African-Americans could not leave the crop until their debt was paid which was difficult because it was a continuous circle. All this was still slavery but was considered legal because of the 13th amendment.
