In the movie Slavery By Another Name ways white Southerners basically recreated slavery are showcased. In sharecropping, tenants are in debt to their landlords almost permanently, and cannot leave their land or they will be arrested. In convict leasing, people who were convicted could be sold to companies for as little as $9 a month. Lastly, in debt peonage people worked for a person they were in debt to. Debt peonage was a practice that was outlawed after the Civil War in 1867. Whites often used this practice to trap blacks in a new form of slavery. Often times after a person was done working off their debt, they were still made to work.
